Founded in 2016, Our Bright Future was established by Kwasi Acheampong. Acheampong was born in Ghana, West Africa. Acheampong’s parents brought him and his nine siblings to the US in pursuit of educational and economic opportunities for their family. Settling in Webster, MA, the family faced many of the challenges common among newly arrived immigrants to the US, including securing housing and steady employment. Throughout his childhood, he witnessed the cycle of drug use, watching the habits of adults in his neighborhood eventually be passed down to their children. After losing a childhood friend to an overdose, Acheampong set out to create a program that can intervene — helping children step off the cycle of generational poverty. Acheampong’s lived experiences navigating education and social structures as a low-income first-generation student led him to get involved with sports. This gave him the opportunity to establish deep roots in Webster, MA; as an adult, he was determined to give back to the community that had provided him with so much, specifically to young people he saw experiencing some of the very same challenges he endured.
